Themes

1.) I think that the theme for chapter 15 is innocence and not innocent because towards the end of the chapter Jem and Scout and Dill go downtown to find Atticus and make sure he's okay, but when they went down they found him talking to these men and then Scout jumped out. Jem refused to go home when Atticus told him too and that is why i think the theme is what it is because Jem and Scout are trying to act like adults and Atticuz is getting tougher on them.

2.) In this chapter Atticus seems to be getting more strict and farther away from Jem and Scout. I think this because he sometimes has no sympathy for them anymore and he's always leaving and going places. In this chapter Mr. Cunninghams seems like he doesn't really care for his son because when Scout tried to talk about his son, he didn't say anything until Scout changed the subject.

In Class Work

I think that the reasoning is that Aunt Alexandra told Atticus that Jem and Scout need to start acting more like a Lady and a gentleman because she fears that they will ruin the Finch family reputation. I think she meant that he was trying to be convincing and telling them that he is becoming more like Cousin Joshua and he hopes he doesn't cost the family 500 dollars and he means to tell them that if they keep acting the way they do and they don't start acting like a lady and a gentleman, then they will become like Cousin Joshua and cost the family 500 dollars. In conclusion, I think that when Scout says only a woman can do that job, she means that only a woman can be that convincing.

Stages of Morality

1.) I think that Scout falls under the stage of self-interest because she is a little girl and she does what will make her happy, although she doesn't do anything that might hurt someone she cares about. For example, she plays the Radley game with Dill and Jem because it makes her happy and she has fun doing so. Even though Jem has grown out of that stage by this time in the book, Scout still believes that it is okay.

2.) I believe that Atticus follows the stage of Order and Law because first off, he's a lawyer. Also when he is not at work he believes that you should not break the law because you will be punished. For example, when Atticus had to defend a black man, he did not refuse the case because it was against the law to refuse because it was his job. Also when people called him horrid names for defending Tom Robinson, he did not call them anything because he believes that firing a comment back is the right thing to do.

Norms Questions

1.) I think that Atticus follows the Subjective Norms because he is a parent and he sometimes has expectations for Jem and Scout. For example, he expects them to be on their best behavior because he doesn't want them to grow up with no rules because he wants them to succeed in whatever they would like to do. Lots of parents want good futures for their children and they want the best for their children and just because Atticus isn't the best parent, according to some, doesn't mean he doesn't have rules.

2.) The first example is when people keep calling Atticus the n-word lover. This is an example because even though no one says it's wrong to defend a black person, they all think that. A second example is when Jem destroyed all of Mrs. Dubose's bushes because even though nobody really said that was wrong, everyone knew it was wrong and Jem had to be punished. A third example is when Scout beat up Walter and she knew it was wrong and Calpurnia was mad at her and Scout knew it was wrong and although Calpurnia scolded her, she still knew it was wrong.

Chapters 9 & 10

I don't know what happened to make Scout do what she did. Well I knew she hated Francis, but I didn't think it would go ths far. They were okay most of the night. After dinner I came out and checked on them, reckoned they were fightin' by now, but they were just standin' there, so I went back in. I stayed in there for a while, thought since they weren't fightin' now, they wouldn't, boy was I wrong. Next thing I know, I hear Francis screamin' for Aunt Alexandra. I run out and I saw Uncle Jack beatin' Scout. I got the story from everyone. Francis was callin' Atticus, well Atticus told us not to say it, but you know what I mean...black man-lover. Scout told him to stop, but he kept goin' and goin' and Scout had enough. I don't blame her, but she could've handled this better, so she wouldn't have to of get beaten.

Scout is always sayin' how Atticus can't do nothin' 'cause he's old, now I don't completely disagree, but he is kinda old. Now for Christmas, me and Scout got air rifles and we wanted to go in the woods and use them. We were just lookin' and walkin' 'round when we saw ol' Tim Johnson and he was lokin' real sick. We wen back to the house and grabbed Calpurnia. We took her to the spot where we saw the dog and she yelled at us to get inside. She called Atticus and then she started screamin' "RAPID DOG, MAD DOG" all over the town. When Atticus arrived with Heck Tate, the sheriff, Tim Johnson was already at the Radley gate. Heck and Atticus were arguin' 'bout who's gonna shoot the dog. After a little bit, Heck handed the gun to Atticus and Actticus shot the dog...perfect aim. We had asked Miss Maudie and she said that our dad used to be Old One-Shot Finch. Scout was ready to tell the whole school 'bout this, but I told her that if Atticus didn't tell us, maybe he didn't want us to know. So we kept it a secret and found that Atticus isn't too old to do stuff.

Scout chapters 7 & 8

It was the last night that Dill was here before school started. We were on our way to the Radley place cause' Jem and Dill wanted to try to see Boo Radley, I thought it was a bad idea, but i didn't want to be left out again. We got there and Dill was lifted onto Jem's shoulders to get a good look, but we heard something that scared us and we ran as fast as we could to the fence to get away. I got through the fence easily, but Jem had some trouble, he ended up havin' to leave his pants there. When we went to the crowd of people, Mr.Radley had a gun and said that whoever was in his yard better not come back cause' he will shot em' and then everyone looked at Jem. I turned and saw that he still didnt have pants on, he was gonna get in so much trouble, but Dill made up a story bout' us playin' strip poker or somethin'. It worked. That night as we was sleepin' i heard Jem get up. He said he had to go and get his pants so he wouldn't get in trouble. I wanted to go, but he said I couldn't. I waited up for him and when he came back he didn't say nothin', he just went to bed, I didn't ask what was wrong.

I looked out the window and didn't really understand what I was lookin' at. Atticus tod us it was snow. Jem wanted to make a snowman, but we didn't know how. Jem just started gatherin' dirt from the back yard, I did as I was told. I followed Jem over to Miss Maudie's and he asked if we could use her snow and she let us have it all! Jem started building a snowman outta mud and then he started to cover it in snow. It looked just like Mr. Avery. Atticus told us to disguise it so no one would notice. Later on I was woken up by Atticus with Jem standin' right next to him. They told me to get up. We walked outside and I saw that Miss Maudie's house was flamin'. Atticus told us to stand by the Radley place. The night went on and more people were comin' out and helpin' with the fire. It was freezin' out! After a little while an the fire went out, we went back to the house. Atticus asked me where I got the blanket that was 'round my shoulders, but I had no idea how it got there. Jem said he figured it was Boo Radley, I shuttered at the thought. The next day we offered Miss Maudie help, but she said no and she was auall jokin' bout Boo and the blanket. I found it weird that she was in a good mood after her house burnt down, but I didn't ask any questions.
